The exhibition “Steve McCurry. Distant Horizons” presents, for the first time in Parma, a selection of the photographer’s most iconic images—offering a complete overview of the unique style of this great American artist.
The exhibition invites visitors to discover McCurry’s extraordinary talent through images of powerful emotional impact.
It aims to shed light on the many artistic and journalistic experiences that have shaped his career—from his early travels in India to his time in Afghanistan, where McCurry followed the Mujaheddin during the war against Russia, at a time when the country was closed to Western visitors.
From Afghanistan also comes Sharbat Gula, the girl whose portrait became world-famous on the cover of National Geographic.
If Henri Cartier-Bresson was “the eye of his century” (the twentieth), Steve McCurry can be considered the photographer who best carries that legacy into the contemporary world.
Thanks to his remarkable sensitivity, McCurry is able to look deeply into his subjects, revealing the profound similarities that unite people across the globe, beyond social and cultural differences.
As a photojournalist, he always strives to show the human face behind the events he witnesses—especially when they are tragic or dramatic.
The exhibition is curated by Biba Giacchetti, organized by ARTIKA in collaboration with Orion57, and supported by the City of Parma.
We wish you an inspiring journey through the faces and distant lands captured by Steve McCurry.
